Construction of a federally mandated crosswalk providing pedestrians safe passage across a busy West Monroe intersection is almost complete.
The crosswalk across at the foot of the Lea Joyner Bridge near Trenton Street will be operational as soon as Wednesday of next week.
The fully controlled pedestrian crosswalk, designed by city engineer Robbie George, includes multiple signals with two islands stationed midway to stop lanes of traffic.
Pedestrians can push a button to signal a traffic stop in the first turn lane. Then pedestrians may walk to the first island, push another button to stop lane traffic, cross to the second island and repeat the process in order to cross the final leg to the other side of the road.
