Mayo, councilmen at odds over budget

Budget hearings for the 2013-2014 fiscal year revealed the new Monroe City Council does not agree with Mayor Jamie Mayo on how the city's money should be spent.
"You can't run the city efficiently with six mayors," Mayo said after last Thursday's final budget hearing. He was referring to himself and the five City Council members.
"They seem to want to run both branches (of government)," Mayo said.
Mayo became agitated during the hearing when council members were discussing the budget of the city's engineering department. Some councilmen contended the department seemed to be running effectively with a part-time engineer since the city's former engineer, Sinyale Morrison, resigned in November. She was indicted by a Ouachita Parish grand jury Feb. 21 for public payroll fraud.
