Lawmakers want more details by Sunny Meriwether - posted Thursday, January 17th, 2013 @ 12:00 pm Local lawmakers say they want more information about Gov. Bobby Jindal's proposal to abolish state income taxes in exchange for raising the state sales tax.
Jindal's plan would eliminate both personal and corporate income taxes, which, according to Jindal, discourage businesses from locating in the state. Abolishing the taxes would put more money in the pockets of Louisiana residents and businesses, Jindal said. To offset the loss of revenues by abolishing income taxes, Jindal proposes to raise the state sales tax by at least two cents. The state currently levies a four-cent sales tax.
Tax exemptions the business community in Louisiana currently enjoys would be open for discussion, too, Jindal says. Some of them could be eliminated, Jindal administration officials say. .....
