Wintry mix slams region by Michael DeVault - posted Thursday, January 17th, 2013 @ 12:00 pm Life is returning to normal across parts of northeast Louisiana hit hard this week by a winter weather system that dumped more than two inches of freezing rain in the region.
The National Weather Service in Shreveport said the system produced roughly 2.8 inches of rain, much of which fell as freezing rain or sleet.
National Weather Service hydrologist S.C. Ross said the wintry mix was the result of two separate weather systems. A blast of polar air from the north interacted with a warm, moist jet stream from the eastern Pacific Ocean.
"The warm air precipitated rain down through the cold air mass, where it cooled the precipitation to near freezing," Ross said. "It fell either as sleet or freezing rain and stuck to objects." .....
