On Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, President Obama and the First Lady Michelle have issued a call asking all Americans to join together in service to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as part of the 57th Presidential Inauguration.
President Obama believes the National Day of Service is an opportunity for all Americans to be a part of the Inauguration. He is encouraging the American people to give back to their communities and reflect on the belief that "working together, we can keep moving our country forward and fulfill the promise of the American dream for all families."

In 1994, the Congress of the United States designated the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday as a National Day of Service. The hope was to encourage citizens to realize Dr. King's dream by applying the principles of nonviolence to make this country a better place to live. In 2009, President Obama called on all Americans to participate in a National Day of Service to commemorate Dr. King and to take action in our communities to help solve social problems. Now, in 2013, President Obama is again asking us to continue our service towards making America a better place to live.

As an elected official, I know that this declared National Day of Service is more than a one-off event, it's a lifelong commitment. I am honored to able to serve our community and I thank God for allowing me the opportunity to be a servant.
It is my prayer that you will participate in the National Day of Service. If you have any questions regarding this event, please call Betty Cooper at 318- 547-0606; e-mail: ndos2013nelajan19@gmail.com.

May God continue to bless our country and our national, state, and local leaders.
