Police Jury budget shows $3.1-million deficit

The Ouachita Parish Police Jury will start the 2013 fiscal year with a planned deficit topping $3.1 million.

At its final meeting of the year Monday night, the Police Jury unanimously approved an $82.7 million budget for the new fiscal year, which begins Jan. 1.
The budget includes spending for several long-term items for which the Police Jury has been saving, according to Police Jury Finance Committee Chairman Walt Caldwell.

Caldwell said the deficit was not an indicator of poor finances.

"We planned for it," Caldwell said.
