Sewer rates in the city of Monroe will increase 55 percent beginning Jan. 1.
The Monroe City Council approved rate hike Tuesday night during its regular meeting.
The new sewer rates will cost customers $3.55 per 1,000 gallons of water consumed, a rate that should return the city's sewer fund to solvency after more than five years of deficits.
City Council chairman Jay Marx said the increases were necessary, in part, to offset the deficits in the sewer department and protect the city's credit rating.
