Sales tax collections throughout Ouachita Parish dipped slightly in September over the same period last year, according to figures released earlier this week by the Monroe City Taxation and Revenue Department.

Sales tax collections in September totaled some $12.8 million, roughly $256,000 less than the same period last year, marking a decline of roughly two percent.
The City of Monroe Taxation and Revenue department collects sales taxes for all jurisdictions in Ouachita Parish.

The Town of Sterlington saw the largest falloff, with a decline of more than 31 percent. In 2011, Sterlington collected $49,388. Collections in September of this year totaled $33,876, a decline of more than $15,500.

Sterlington Mayor Vern Breland took the decline in stride and said it was an anticipated decline.
