City transit looks for maintenance guru

An aging fleet of buses in the Monroe Transit System will necessitate hiring a well-qualified maintenance director. But the outside management firm that operates MTS on the City of Monroe's behalf wants that individual to work for them, not the city.

First Transit general manager Chris Phelps said allowing his company to employ a maintenance director would give First Transit greater flexibility in looking for the right candidate.

"The intricacies of maintaining the buses get more difficult over the years as they get older," Phelps told the Monroe City Council at a regular meeting Tuesday night.
Phelps and his employer, First Transit, are under contract with the city to operate and manage the transit system, which ranks among the oldest and most successful in the nation.
