Jurors nix tax hike request

The Ouachita Parish Police Jury Finance Committee turned down a request Monday to raise property taxes for Green Oaks Juvenile Detention Center.
The finance committee acted on the matter following the Police Jury's regular meeting.
Green Oaks officials asked police jurors for permission to collect the full 2.91 mills that voters approved to operate the detention center. Currently, Green Oaks collects 2.6 mills.
Though an advisory board appointed by the Police Jury manages Green Oaks, the Police Jury has final say over the detention center's budget because it is a parish-owned facility. That means the Police Jury has the final say-so on which property tax rate to levy for Green Oaks.
