ULM ponders natural history museum's future

An award-winning and nationally recognized natural history museum will be shuttered and closed for at least three years.

Officials at the University of Louisiana-Monroe announced last week the ULM Museum of Natural History will temporarily close its doors later this month ahead of a planned $17.5-million overhaul of Sandel Hall. Sandel has housed the museum's collections for three years.

Supporters of the museum have taken to social media and editorial pages to deride the decision to shudder the museum. But ULM executive vice president Stephen Richters said the storage of the museum would be temporary.
