PRAIRIE ROAD WATER DISTRICT NOTICE TO WATER CUSTOMERS PRAIRIE ROAD WATER SUPPLY 06/20/2006 PWS ID No LA 1073040 The Prairie Road Water District is currently in violation of the maximum contaminant level for total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) as set forth by the States (Part XII of the Louisiana State Sanitary Code) and the Federal Primary Water Regulations (40 CFR Part 141). Although this incident is not an emergency, as our customers, you have the right to know what happened and what we are doing to correct this situation. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (LDHH) set drinking water standards and require the disinfection of drinking water. Where disinfection is used in the treatment of drinking water, disinfectants combine with naturally occurring organic and inorganic matter present in water to form chemicals called disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The EPA and LDHH set standards for controlling the levels of disinfectants and DBPs in drinking water, including trialmethanes (THMs) Some people who drink water containing THMs in excess of the MCL over MANY YEARS may experience problems with liver, kidneys, or central nervous systems, and may have an increased risk of cancer. In December 1998, EPA set enforceable drinking water standard for TTHMs at 80 parts per billion (ppb) to reduce the risk of cancer or other adverse health effects. Compliance with the TTHM standard for all public ground water systems initially became effective and enforceable on January 1, 2004. Compliance with the TTHMs standard is determined by calculations performed during the fourth calendar quarter of 2004, the fourth calendar quarter of 2005, and the second calendar quarter of 2006 show that the systemís current TTHMs are 170 ppb thus, the system is currently in violation of the TTHMs standard. Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail. THIS IS NOT AN EMERGENCY if it had been, you would have been notified immediately. EPA and LDHH do not consider this violation to have any serious adverse health effects on human health as a result of short-term exposure; however, continued long-term exposure to TTHMs levels above the standard (e.g., 20 years of exposure) has the potential to have serious adverse effects on human health. If you should have any questions please contact Ted Davidson, Operator at Prairie Road Water District, 2176 Prairie Road, Monroe, LA 71202; (318) 235-8461. 7/13 1tb
Ouachita Parish School Board - 318.388.2711 Notice to parents of students living in Richwood School zone: Under the Louisiana School Accountability System, schools receive numerical scores (School Performance Scores SPS) based upon their students? test scores on the LEAP/GEE and iLEAP, as well as their attendance and/or dropout rates. Beginning with the 2005 Accountability results, schools with a Baseline SPS below 60 were labeled "Academically Unacceptable" and were required to offer School Choice. Richwood Junior and Richwood High Schools were in this category and, due to the fact that new scores will not be released from the Louisiana Department of Education until much later this fall, will remain so for the 2006-2007 school year. Parents interested in further information should call the Ouachita Parish School Board at 398-9888 or log on to www.opsb.net. 7/13 1tb
