Board gives Flowers hefty pay raise

The Monroe City School Board approved a new contract for interim superintendent Derenda Flowers, who also serves as the school system's chief financial officer, during the board's regular meeting Tuesday night.

The new contract includes a compensation plan paying Flowers the difference between her previous salary as CFO and the advertised salary of the open superintendent position, said School Board attorney Doug Lawrence.

"The contract recognizes that Flowers occupies a dual role in the district when she became interim superintendent," Lawrence said. "It makes an adjustment to pay her on a pro-rated basis because the superintendent position pays more money."

School Board Vice President Mickey Traweek said the board took the difference between the superintendent and CFO salaries, divided it by 12 and agreed to pay her that amount for each month she had worked and continues to work as interim superintendent.
