Area players start in LSU opening series

Former Ouachita Christian standout Mark Laird started all three games in right field in LSU's season-opening series against Maryland at Alex Box Stadium last weekend.

As the two-hole hitter for the Tigers, the left-hander only notched two hits in 12 at bats while, but LSU coach Paul Mainieri remains upbeat about his speedy freshman.

"We didn't even see what Mark Laird can do offensively," Mainieri said on Sunday. "You watch and see this kid as the season goes on. Once he gets rolling, he is going to be a special player."
