Acting during its regular meeting Tuesday night, the Board of Aldermen approved a resolution calling for the special election for voters to consider the 1.63-mill levy. Mayor Dave Norris said the 10-year property tax was in place when he took office in 1978. "This tax preceded the time I took office and this will be my fourth time to see it renewed," Norris said. Benny Chelette, West Monroe's city clerk, said the property tax generates about $280,000 a year.
