National School Counseling Week celebrated

The week of Feb. 4-8 was recognized as National School Counseling Week to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do.

National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. The theme for National School Counseling Week 2013 was "School Counseling: Liberty and Learning for All,"

Many adults that I talk to these days about my job ask me, "Why would an elementary school need a counselor?" For most of us, we remember our high school counselors who helped us with scheduling, testing, and scholarships. I want to ask them, "Have you read the newspaper lately? Have you talked to an elementary school teacher lately to see what they face on a daily basis? Are you living in a vacuum?"
