Monroe unveils emergency coordination center

Mayor Jamie Mayo and Fire Chief Jimmie Bryant unveiled the Monroe Emergency Coordination Center, or MECC, Tuesday at the city's Public Safety Center.

The MECC was established to serve as a central gathering point for all city departments to meet and coordinate resources and responses in the event of a man-made or natural incident.

"The biggest problem in emergency events is the sharing of information between departments," Bryant said. "The purpose of the center is to retrieve information not just related to incidents in the immediate parish but also to retrieve information about events before it gets to us."

Police Chief Quentin Holmes said the MECC would go a long way toward uniting efforts by the city's police and fire departments, eliminating unnecessary overlap between each department's actions during an emergency event.
