Northeast Louisiana's Poverty Point State Historic Site and National Monument near Epps has been nominated for inclusion on the World Heritage list by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The nomination represents years of work toward making the list. If Poverty Point is included on the list, it could mean an influx of national and international tourists and a resultant economic boom for the area, including Ouachita Parish in particular. There are only 21 World Heritage Sites in the U.S., out of the 962 sites in 157 countries inscribed on the list.
