Monroe to celebrate King legacy The City of Monroe has planned its 34th celebration of the life of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for next Thursday, Jan. 17.
The featured speaker will be the son of one of Dr. King's most prominent associates, Dr. Ralph D. Abernathy III, the oldest living son of Rev. Dr. Ralph David Abernathy, King's chief aide.
"We're very excited about that, because his dad was obviously a strong part of the civil rights movement, along with Dr. King. They worked side by side," Mayo said. "When I initially met him, he referred to Dr. King as "Uncle Martin," and he talked a lot about his growing-up years with Dr. King's children, and some of his lifetime experiences. So I think it brings a lot of things to life, having him as our keynote speaker for the Martin Luther King Day celebration next Thursday." .....For the full story, subscribe to the The Ouachita Citizen's NEW E-Edition! |
