DWI arrests down during holiday season

Local law enforcement agencies have something to celebrate at the close of the 2012 holiday season after a decline in arrests for driving under the influence.

Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Marc Mashaw said deputies made only four DWI arrests from Dec. 16, 2012, to Jan. 2, 2013.

That is a much lower figure than normal for the holiday season, when DWI arrests routinely number in the double-digits.

"People are apparently getting the message and being responsible," Mashaw said.
Mashaw also credited a region-wide Safety Cab service, which offered revelers the ability to party safely during the holidays.
