Committee squashes pay hikes

Automatic pay raise for Ouachita Parish school system teachers could be on the way out if the School Board approves a finance committee recommendation to end the pay hikes.

In a meeting earlier this week, the School Board Finance Committee recommended a salary schedule for the 2013-14 academic year that would eliminate the automatic "step" increases each year. Instead, only teachers who are rated "effective" under the state's new Compass evaluation system would receive a "step" increase.

The School Board could act on the recommendation at its Dec. 13 meeting.
A subcommittee of the finance committee chaired by Kiroli Elementary School Principal Carolyn Norris studied "step" increases extensively, reviewing the new requirements under Act 1 of the 2012 legislative session.
