West Monroe head coach Don Shows released from hospital by Zach Parker - posted Tuesday, November 27th, 2012 @ 11:48 am  E-mail Story |  Print Story  After being under observation in the intensive care unit for a spot of blood on his brain, West Monroe head coach Don Shows was released from Glenwood Regional Medical Center at noon on Monday and hopes to return to practice this week to prepare the Rebels for their Friday fourth-round playoffs game against No. 2 Barbe. Shows was taken to the hospital during their quarterfinal win against Airline when a late sideline hit by a football player in the last two minutes of the game knocked him momentarily unconscious. "He's out of the hospital and returned home last night," said West Monroe Rebels Defensive Coordinator Jerry Arledge. "He called me last night to tell me he was going to try to get to practice today, but even if he isn't on the field, he'll be watching through a window." West Monroe's coaching staff was prepared to coach the team without Shows if his condition prevented him but were pleased to see him out of the hospital. "We're happy to have him back in any capacity," Arledge said. At the hospital, physicians running CAT scans found a spot of blood on his brain and kept him under observation for the weekend to ensure it wouldn't develop into a blood clot or any other harmful condition. The players and coaching staff look forward to welcoming Shows back to the field. Shows was hospitalized in August for issues related to his blood sugar, then suspended by the LHSAA for the first two games of the season. Shows was hospitalized again Nov. 16 during the Rebels' second-round playoffs game for issues with his blood pressure but returned to practice the following week. The Hall of Fame coach isn't letting anything stop him from coaching his team, especially at such a critical time as the Rebels enter semi-finals for the right to play for the 5A state championship title at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Dec. 8. Coach Shows and the Rebels travel to Lake Charles on Friday for the semi-finals round against Barbe.
