Monroe City Council delays transit contract

The contractor in charge of running the Monroe Transit System will have to wait two weeks before it can begin the process of hiring a new maintenance director.

At a Monroe City Council meeting Tuesday night, more than a dozen transit workers showed up to voice opposition to expanding the role First Transit Inc. plays in operating Monroe Transit, one of the oldest public transportation systems in the nation.

"In the last four years, First Transit has almost destroyed the system and morale around the system," said transit union president Gene Haynes. "They are writing up employees every day for one thing or another and not because of the betterment of the operation."
