Family sues city schools over tape incident

The parents of a Clara Hall Elementary student filed a lawsuit against Monroe City Schools for emotional damage that they claim their child suffered at the hands of a teacher at the school.

Ed Haynes V was attending Clara Hall last year when, his parents claim, second grade teacher Courtney Berry confined Haynes to his desk.

"On or about Nov. 1, 2011, Ed Haynes V was tied to his desk with duct tape or other means by his teacher, Ms. Courtney Berry, in the presence and full view of his classmates," the lawsuit states.

Berry was one of several named defendants in the lawsuit, which was filed last week in Fourth Judicial District Court. Also named were former Superintendent Kathleen Harris, current interim Superintendent Derinda Flowers, members of the Monroe City School Board and the Monroe city school system.
