AmeriCorps funding increases

An increase in federal funding will mean the West Monroe Community Center can provide an additional 21 workers to assist in three separate programs, a center official says.

In previous years, the federal AmeriCorps program provided up to $225,000 to fund volunteer activities. This year, though the program increased funding and provided $274,350, an increase of almost $50,000.

"We had 71 people last year, but we needed 96 people to carry out what we wanted to do," said Community Center executive director Julia Harris. "And they gave us all of them. They approved everything we asked for, actually. "
