School Board OKs annexation maneuver

The Ouachita Parish School Board unanimously agreed last week to sign off on Sterlington's plans to annex Sterlington High School into the town's corporate limits.

Sterlington High School's existing facilities were built in 1999, south of the town's corporate limits and just west of U.S. 165, in an unincorporated area of the parish. At the time, the School Board refused an annexation request.

Sterlington Mayor Vern Breland said concerns expressed some 12 years ago about infrastructure and law enforcement coverage was valid.

"Twelve years ago, those were the issues that were brought up, and now we're able to address those issues," Breland said.
