OPPJ cuts tax distribution to Sterlington

The Town of Sterlington will lose significant funding after the Ouachita Parish Police Jury unanimously voted to cut the amount of sales tax revenues the Police Jury shares with Sterlington.

Beginning in 2008, the Police Jury gave Sterlington roughly $264,000 a year in sales tax revenues that the Police Jury collected within Sterlington's boundaries. That agreement was for five years and is set to expire in 2013.

At a regular meeting of the Police Jury Monday night, jurors opted to cut by half the amount of money it gives Sterlington each year from sales tax revenues collected within the town's corporate limits.

"Half is better than nothing," said Sterlington Mayor Vern Breland.
