The dog days of August are almost here, and that means the Downtown Gallery Crawl will soon lighten the late-summer doldrums.

The Downtown Arts Alliance sponsors the free bi-monthly event, which is set for Thursday, August 2nd. Nine galleries in the riverfront areas of Monroe and West Monroe will be open from 5-9 p.m.

Several of the galleries are clustered on what is now called Art Alley, formerly 2nd Street in Monroe, with others on Desiard and South Grand Streets, as well as the Ouachita River Art Guild Gallery on Trenton Street in West Monroe. Together, they form the nucleus of the non-profit Downtown Arts Alliance.

Alliance Communications Director Ann Smith said the artists gravitated together downtown for a couple of reasons.
