Former councilman Gilmore to appeal conviction

SHREVEPORT -- The attorney for former Monroe City Councilman Arthur Gilmore Jr., who was convicted of racketeering Thursday in U.S. District Court, said his client would continue fighting.

Defense attorney Charles Kincade said that "we're very disappointed with this partial conviction, but we're going to keep fighting." Gilmore was found not guilty of extortion under the Hobbs Act.

Gilmore was convicted for violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, better known as RICO. The conviction stemmed from his involvement with Monroe businessman Eddie Hakim.

Gilmore refused to comment after the verdict.
