Council shelves backflow preventer requirement

The Monroe City Council has spiked a plan to require certain businesses and residences to install a pricy addition to their water lines.

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to remove from its agenda the final adoption of an ordinance that would require the installation of backflow preventers on some residences and most businesses. The council acted on the matter during its regular meeting.

Backflow preventers are federally required safety devices that prevent water from flowing out of a home or business and into the city water supply, which can result in contaminated drinking water.
