Edward Thatch only worked as a pirate for about 18 months, in the last years of his life, but he'll forever be known as the greatest, most feared and most successful pirate in history, thanks to the persona he created for himself.

Thatch was better known as Blackbeard.

The life of Blackbeard was the subject of a lecture Thursday at the English Speaking Union's annual lecture, presented by Dr. Elliot Engel. The event was held at Bayou DeSiard Country Club.
