Dorothy Kovalchick Roark's first brush with baseball history came when she was just a girl from Sagamore, Pennsylvania.

Though she now lives in West Monroe, in the 1940s Dorothy was playing first base on her father's semi-pro baseball team. That's when a recruiter for the Pittsburg Pirates came calling with a message: "Dottie" could play ball for the professional club, touring with the team, under one condition.

Her mother would have to chaperone Dorothy's trips.

Unfortunately, Dorothy recalls, her mother declined the offer. It wasn't the first time her parents had gotten in the way of Dorothy's path to baseball history. Only a few months before, her father had begun intercepting letters from GIs stationed overseas.
