The University of Louisiana-Monroe has been awarded a $565,000 state grant to monitor watersheds in two of the region's most precious waterways.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality awarded the ULM toxicology department the grant to conduct two years of research in Bayou Lafourche and Turkey Creek, both of which flow through the Bouef River sub-basin.

"Our partnership with ULM will benefit DEQ, the university and the state," said DEQ Secretary Peggy Hatch. "It is the best use of resources for the common good and we are very pleased to be working with the university and its researchers."

Hatch joined Sen. Mike Walsworth, ULM president Nick Bruno and ULM professor Dr. Kevin Baer at a grant presentation at ULM on Tuesday.
