Area lawmakers are taking a cautious approach to a $25.5-billion proposed budget that Gov. Bobby unveiled last week.

Jindal's proposed budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year represents a pared down spending plan compared to the one first floated weeks ago by Commissioner of Administration Paul Rainwater. The original budget Rainwater rolled out featured a projected $895-million budget shortfall heading into the new fiscal year.

By law, a governor is required to submit a balanced budget to the Legislature for its consideration. The Legislature is required by law to approve a balanced budget.
The 2012-2013 fiscal year begins July 1.
