West Monroe readies for evacuees The City of West Monroe is almost ready to welcome evacuees in case of a natural disaster.
Mayor Dave Norris said expansions and improvements at the West Ouachita Senior Center and the West Monroe Community Center can house as many as 1,000 displaced people.
Norris said that after Hurricane Katrina, the Governor's Office of Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security established a competitive funding process to help local governments improve their ability to house and care for evacuees.
"They hit upon the idea that existing facilities could be modified or added to so that whatever was built would be designed to handle evacuees but also could be used for other purposes when there's not a need for evacuation," Norris said.
