Legislation prefiled by a Ouachita Parish lawmaker would increase penalties for felony battery on members of the armed services and disabled veterans.

House Bill 16 by state Rep. Jay Morris, R-Monroe, would require a person convicted of that crime to serve at least one year in prison without benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence. Morris' bill will be heard during the regular legislative session, which begins March 12.

The bill has been assigned to the House Committee on Criminal Justice.
Morris said he believes servicemen deserve protection and respect under Louisiana law.
