Grant funds safer highways

Drivers traveling along a busy West Monroe street Friday night were in for a surprise.

More than two dozen officers from the West Monroe police department, University of Louisiana-Monroe and Louisiana State Police Troop F were on hand at the intersection of Stella and 4th Street to conduct a DWI checkpoint.

The checkpoint was funded by a federal grant to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. The LHSC in turn distributes the money it receives through competitive grants to law enforcement agencies throughout the state.
