The letter came via FedEx Express service one night early in December. And for Sterlington High School senior Andrew Tan, it was better than an early Christmas present.

The letter was to tell Tan he'd been chosen as one of Louisiana's two delegates to the United States Senate Youth Program.

The USSYP, as it's called, was set up by the Senate and the Hearst Foundation in 1962 to provide the opportunity for outstanding students interested in public service to get an in-depth look at the workings of the Senate and the federal government. The delegates will spend a week in Washington, D.C., in March.
