Police jury gives raises

Employees of the Ouachita Parish Police Jury will get a pay raise beginning Dec. 26, after jurors approved a two-percent cost-of-living increase Monday night.

Meanwhile, at the final regular meeting of the 2011 year, the Police Jury approved a new budget that includes a budgeted deficit of $8.77 million for the 2012 year.

Police Jury finance committee chairman Charles Jackson said the deficit was mostly due to planned expenditures that the Police Jury has been anticipating for several years.

"The $8 million is by and large nothing to raise eyebrows about, because it is actually money that we have laid aside for projects that we're finishing next year," Jackson said.
