Legislators assess state budget cuts

Louisiana will take in almost $200 million less than expected in the 2011-2012 fiscal year, according to figures released last week by the Revenue Estimating Conference.

According to state officials, the state will end the fiscal year $197.3 million in the red on June 30, 2012. That means lawmakers in Baton Rouge will have to work with Gov. Bobby Jindal's office to come up with mid-year budget cuts to offset the shortfall.

State Sen. Bob Kostelka blamed the lost revenue on uncertainties surrounding the national economy.
