Cultura Book Club had the privilege of holding their October meeting at the Riverscape Penthouse of Melody Olsen.

Members present were: Linda Armstrong, Annette Bedgood, Montez Branch, Emma Burkett, Gloria Camp, Sue Drewett, Barbara Ewing, Sue Greer, Jean Halsell, Angie Jones, Kitty Liner, Pat McClendon, Jean Rugg, Clara Sikes, Susie Sikes, Pat Valentine, Hattie Watson and Loyce Whitlock.

Due to the absence of the president, Peggy Henderson, vice president Montez Branch introduced Melody Olsen to the group. Olsen, who occupies the penthouse as her residence, began by welcoming the group to her home. She gave a short history of the hotel: Built in 1920 and known as Hotel Monroe, it became the Penn Hotel in 1928 and was a full-service hotel. The 44,000 sq. ft. concrete structure is located on South Grand Street in Monroe. The early hotel was surrounded by other hotels, restaurants and businesses.
