Checks in the mail Checks are in the mail to the 50 or so largest property tax payers in Ouachita Parish.
The checks represent a refund of taxes that were collected to help finance a $15-million incentives package for a failed effort to establish an automobile manufacturing operation in eastern Ouachita.
The Ouachita Parish Police Jury on Monday unanimously approved refunding more than $1.4 million in property taxes it has held since 2009, the only year the Police Jury levied a 1.8-mill tax that parish voters approved to help lure Next Autoworks Co. to the region.
Voters approved the tax in 2009 to cover some $11.4 million in incentives the Police Jury and the cities of Monroe and West Monroe committed toward the $15-million incentives package.
