Police Jury restores OCC budget

The Ouachita Parish Police Jury will pay more than 300,000 it owes the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office for operating Ouachita Correctional Center.

The payment from the Police Jury to Sheriff's Office is forthcoming because the parish prison is expected to close out the 2011 fiscal year with a budget surplus.

The Police Jury voted in May to withhold the money in anticipation of a budget deficit at OCC. At that time, the Police Jury pledged to restore the funds if the Sheriff's Office found a way to stave off deficit spending at OCC, which has plagued the prison in recent years.

By law, the Police Jury is responsible for providing clothing, food, medical care and shelter for prisoners at OCC. The Sheriff's Office is responsible for staffing and operating the prison.
