Story Archives: Region gets into Christmas spirit

Region gets into Christmas spirit
by Michael DeVault - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Holiday celebrations are well under way in the Twin Cities, and the weeks leading up to Christmas are chock full of activities to enthrall the whole family.

Though inclement weather forced the City of West Monroe's tree lighting celebration indoors Saturday, the rain and cold did not dampen spirits.
Meanwhile, the University of Louisiana-Monroe got into the Christmas spirit with its own lighting celebration Tuesday evening.

Festivities will continue this weekend with, among other things, a pair of Christmas parades in downtown Monroe and the Bawcomville community.

Alana Cooper, director of the Monroe/West Monroe Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the holiday season is a busy one. She said the CVB and area organizations have been working for several years to expand the season into "more than just a shopping trip."

"The holidays always have been a good season for us, as far as people coming in and shopping," said Cooper. "We're trying to get them to stay and make an event of it, since we have such a wide array of things for whole families to enjoy during Christmas."

Cooper said Christmas on the River fills a void in the region.
"People like to do their Christmas shopping, but they want to do more," Cooper said. "They want to eat something good, they want to see a play or visit Journey Through Bethlehem at the mall."

The wide variety of art, musical and theatre offerings are designed to appeal to everyone.

"There is something for everybody, to meet whatever you'd like to experience for your Christmas," Cooper said.
