He was a country boy from Crowville. His parents had taught him a way of life that was guided by honesty, humility, and a caring heart for his fellow man. He was especially partial to those who were considered underdogs; the underprivileged.

He came from a family of nine children. Two of his sisters died at a young age.

One drowned in the Beough River and the other died of scarlet fever.
