While Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales drew millions of bargain-hungry shoppers to malls and "big box" stores around the country this holiday shopping season and drove sales up more than $7 billion over last year, closer to home, locally owned businesses in one area small town could also see significant increases.
Sterlington Mayor Vern Breland says people in his town once had no choice but to travel to Monroe and West Monroe for many purchases.
"Used to, we didn't have a retail outlet that sold TVs, that sold DVD players," Breland says. "But Fred's, now that they've opened, they carry them.
