Smaller means bigger

As the year of 2011 draws to an end with the New Year only five weeks away, I want to turn attention to national trends that we can expect in the not-too distant future.
These trends are already affecting the east and west coasts and as we know what begins there ends here. There are major changes on the horizon for retailers and future apartment dwellers.

The apartments built in the future, due in part to financing constraints and land cost will be smaller with more units built on less land than in the past.

The most popular unit will be an upscale one bedroom, 20 percent smaller than those we see today. The average size will be 600 square feet for lower rent units, 700 square feet for mid rents and 800 square feet for luxury units.
