Tight revenues strain public works A dispute over cost-of-living pay raises for parish employees reared its head at the Ouachita Parish Police Jury.
During a Police Jury finance committee meeting held Monday night, Police Juror Mack Calhoun said he wants to give public works department employees a 2-percent raise in the coming year.
Calhoun made the move in spite of public works expected to post a $765,000 deficit in 2011. The parish public works department is projected to run a $1.1 million deficit in 2012. "We cannot keep our employees," said Calhoun. "We are not paying them enough to make a living."
Calhoun pointed out that the number of people working for the parish's public works department had regressed in recent years. According to Calhoun, the public works department employed about 125 people five years ago.
