50th annual gumbo marks last for church When the stove is turned off this fall for the last time at Memorial United Methodist Church in Monroe, it will be "the end of an era" as the church celebrates their 50th and final Bazaar and Gumbo Sale one last time.
Since 1961, members of the United Methodist Women and the men of the church, have cooked and prepared the chicken and shrimp gumbo, sewed, baked, and lovingly used their talents and skills to use the profits from this annual event to carry out the missions of the church locally, nationally, and worldwide.
"This year has been determined to be the best! and we hope you will come and look at it as a homecoming also," said Memorial pastor Jimmie Pyles. "I have just completed my second year of the gumbo and bazaar. How many churches have a special ministry that has continued for 50 years, which services both its membership and the community?
