|ULM drops thriller at UL-Lafayette|
LAFAYETTE, La. -- Aided by a lucky bounce on an on-side kick, UL-Lafayette rallied from an 11-point deficit with two touchdowns over a 59-second span to stun ULM 36-35 Saturday evening in Sun Belt Conference action at Cajun Field.
The Warhawks took a 35-24 lead on Jyruss Edwards' third rushing touchdown and fourth overall touchdown of the game with 3:08 to play in the game.
ULL (8-2, 6-1 Sun Belt) started the ensuing drive on the ULM 48-yard line after a late hit by the Warhawks out of bounds. The ULM defense held on the first two plays, but Blaine Gautier completed a 23-yard pass to Harry Peoples on third down to give the Cajuns first down on the ULM 23-yard line. Gautier completed another third down pass, this time a 16-yard strike to Darryl Surgent, for the touchdown with 2:05 to play.
Brett Baer sent the on-side kick screaming down the sideline and it was deflected before Ladarius Green recovered the ball on the ULM 39-yard line. Alonzo Harris plunged in the end zone from three yards out three plays later to put the Cajuns up 36-35. ULM held ULL out of the end zone on the two-point conversion try to keep it a one point game with 1:06 to play.
Back-to-back completions by Kolton Browning pushed the ball across midfield with around 40 seconds to play. Following a rush for no gain and an incompletion, the Warhawks were faced with a 3rd-and-10 from the ULL 46-yard line. Browning completed a pass to Brent Leonard for no gain who appeared to reach the sideline. However, the officials ruled him down in bounds forcing the Warhawks to scramble to get a final play off. Browning picked up 15 yards on a rush as time expired.
Browning completed a career-high 33 passes in 43 attempts for 258 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for career-best 91 yards and a score -- Browning put the Warhawks on the board first with a 62-yard run right through the gut of the Cajun defense.
Edwards rushed for 63 yards on 14 carries and had six catches for 39 yards. His three rushing touchdowns are the most since Frank Goodin had the same number against FIU in 2009. Leonard had seven catches for 79 yards to move into eighth place on the ULM single-season receptions with 59 on the year.
The Warhawks (2-7, 1-4) jumped out to a 14-0 lead with Browning's touchdown run on their first drive of the game and an Edwards 4-yard run at the end of the first quarter.
ULL rolled off 24 straight in the second quarter to take a 10-point lead into the half. Gautier threw a pair of touchdown passes to Green and one Javone Lawson before Baer added a 41-yard field goal right before the half.
Gautier was 30-of-47 for 355 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Green set a Cajun Field record with 13 catches for 136 yards.
For the fourth time in five Sun Belt Conference games this season, ULM outgained its opponent. The Warhawks finished with 456 yards of offense in the game with 258 coming through the air and 198 coming on the ground. The Cajuns totaled 410 yards in the game; 356 through the air and 54 on the ground.
The Warhawks opened the second half like they opened the game, on a mission. Edwards opened the scoring with a 4-yard run on ULM's opening possession of the half and then caught a 12-yard pass from Browning for a score on the first play of the fourth quarter before capping the ULM scoring with his touchdown late in the final quarter.
ULM thought they had scored midway through the third quarter when it appeared that Green had fumbled and Darius Prelow scooped the ball and took it into the end zone for an apparent touchdown. However, the officials ruled on the play that Green's forward progress had stopped despite the fact that he was still spinning forward when the ball came loose. The score would have given the Warhawks a 28-24 lead at the time.
ULM hosts Middle Tennessee next Saturday in Malone Stadium. Kickoff between the Warhawks and Blue Raiders is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
